  The names of Jewish boys reflect language, tradition, history and religion, as most originate from the Hebrew Bible, Rabbinic writings and the Ancient Hebrew language. Many Jewish boys' names are layered with meanings that are linked to one's character, faith, values and the meaning of a name to the Jewish tradition is more than just a name; it signifies one's identity and the intention of their spirituality.

  Jewish boys’ names have typically been selected in order to honour a deceased ancestor or from amongst other major biblical figures; and some Biblical names such as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are commonly associated with leadership, continuity and covenant. The names of some boys like Samuel or Daniel are representative of the moral and loyal strength of the individual. Other names of boys derive from Hebrew terms used as a descriptor of a variety of traits (e.g., peace, wisdom or perseverance).

  There are many diverse customs concerning Jewish boy’s names; for example; Ashkenazim commonly will select the name of a deceased relative or friend to honour, and Sephardim will usually choose the name of a living relative. In modern practice, many families continue to select names with traditional meanings, and will have the names pronounced in a manner that is culturally familiar.

  Understanding the customs associated with Jewish boys' names will assist in learning about cultural heritage, family values, and centuries old customs that continue today.
