The denial aspect you described honestly is probably the most relatable part of this for most car owners. Nobody wants to face a potentially expensive repair and the temptation to find alternative explanations for symptoms is completely human. Writing it out as clearly as you have makes the cost of that denial concrete enough that someone reading this might make a different decision than you did when they notice that first hesitation.
