Why does the Sensitive Plant fold its leaves when touched?

The remarkable leaf-folding behavior of Mimosa pudica is called thigmonasty, a movement triggered by touch or physical stimulation. When the plant is disturbed, specialized cells at the base of the leaflets rapidly change their water pressure, causing the leaves to fold and the stems to droop temporarily. This response may help discourage herbivores or reduce exposure to environmental stress. The leaves normally reopen after a short period when the plant returns to its resting state. Frequent unnecessary touching, however, can place additional stress on the plant.
