How should digital learning content be preserved for long-term accessibility?

I’ve been thinking about an issue that sits between digital education and digital preservation: What happens to learning content when the technology used to deliver it changes?
Education platforms can contain years of valuable material — video lectures, PDFs, interactive exercises, assessments, images, audio recordings, certificates, and student-generated content. While an application may continue working for several years, the underlying file formats, storage systems, APIs, and playback technologies can change much faster.
For an education app development company, this raises an interesting architectural question. Should preservation and portability be considered from the beginning of the product lifecycle, rather than treated as a separate requirement later?
