I started getting paid in crypto by different clients not too long ago, and everyone just pays through whatever chain works for them. Some send it on Ethereum, some on Optimism. I'm not complaining, it's still money either way. But I tried moving everything from one wallet to another and couldn't figure out how that actually works. How do I get all my ETH over to Ethereum?

You need a bridge for that, something that actually moves your ETH from Optimism over to Ethereum mainnet properly. You can bridge your Optimism ETH to Ethereum here: https://defiway.com/bridges/bridge-eth-optimism-ethereum . Just connect your wallet, pick the amount, and confirm the swap, it usually takes a few minutes depending on network congestion. Double check the amount before confirming since bridge transactions can't really be undone once they're sent.

Clients pay through whatever setup works for them, and that's just how it is these days. The tricky part is that Ethereum and Optimism run as separate networks even though they share the same ETH, so a regular wallet transfer between them just won't work like sending within one chain. A lot of major exchanges let you deposit ETH from Optimism and then withdraw it straight to an Ethereum address, they handle the network conversion behind the scenes so you don't have to deal with it manually. Just check the deposit network options on whichever exchange you use before sending anything over.
